Online Location

Shirin Ghareeb is Deputy Director of the Washington, DC International Film Festival (Filmfest DC) where she has served since 1990. She is also Founder and Director of the Arabian Sights Film Festival and is an acknowledged international expert on films from the Arab world.

Now in its 34th year, Filmfest DC is Washington’s oldest and largest film festival and Mrs. Ghareeb is a leader in curating Filmfest DC’s film program and coordinating its administrative activities.

Now in its 25th year, the Arabian Sights Film Festival has become a much anticipated and well-received event. Her expertise and advocacy in this regard have helped give voice to an often under represented filmmaking community and have resulted in increased mutual cultural understanding.

Mrs. Ghareeb is a graduate of Georgetown University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree, and of the Johns Hopkins’ School of Advanced International Studies, where she received a Master’s degree.

In recognition of her accomplishments, Shirin Ghareeb is the recipient of the Women in Film & Video’s 2012 Women of Vision Award. In 2018, she was named one of the 100 Most Important Names in Arab Film in the category of “Festivals” by the Arab Cinema Center in the Cannes edition of the Arab Cinema Magazine.
