ArtSpace Herndon and Film and Video Studies present Best of FAVS, a collection of films that represents some of the great work of Film and Video Studies program. Films in the program:
Visual Scar directed by Sami Ahmed, 6 min. Kirikoo confronts his mind, which is stuck in a cycle of abuse.
Jihad: A Self-Love Story directed by Sumayya Al-Shingieti, 7:23 min. Sumayya decides to show her struggle with identity in a documentary. Overwhelmed by circumstances, she enters a surreal state, torn between past and present.
El Sushi Chef directed by Jeremy Carpel, 9:14 min. A short documentary that follows Luis, an immigrant from El Salvador who works as a sushi chef at a very high end well regarded Japanese restaurant. This documentary reveals how and why Luis came to the United States, how he ended up making sushi at such a prestigious restaurant, the struggles he faces as a Latino immigrant, and explore his hopes and dreams for the future.
The Last Supper directed by Ryan Hill, 6:22 min. Two Mormons stumble upon one lonely alcoholic, his frustrated ex-girlfriend, and learn a lot more about their lives than they ever wanted to.
Finding Annabel directed by Micayla Charles, 7 min
Tides directed by Irem Dogancali, 4 min. A grieving woman goes through different emotions of struggle, hope, diligence, and survival during a therapy session.
Café Kreyól directed by Scott Cooper, 12 min. A short film about “Coffee Hunter” and former drug addict Joey Stazzone as he travels throughout Central America to aid coffee farmers.
Get Well Soon directed by Michael Rose, 5:32 min. A man, who has never been to a funeral before, attends one with a woman he is barely acquainted with.
Kings Park directed by Matt Haskell, 7 min. Sometimes people just need a few minutes…
Ard Laoch na héireann/The Hero of Ireland directed by Paul O’Halloran, 11 min. Dublin, 1918. A bullied boy learns lessons in manhood and violence from his war-veteran father.
L.A.R.P. directed by Brandon Langford. L.A.R.P. is a short documentary that follows two unique individuals as they take part in live action role-play. They not only participate for entertainment and socializing but also use the game sometimes as means of escape. To fulfill a fantasy, become a hero or to broaden and break barriers within oneself all one needs is imagination and a foam sword.
Other directed by Sarah Williams, 5 min. Electra decides what she has to live for, as being a newly transitioned woman in an affair with a married man strips away her own self-identity.
Leroy’s Lobster Shack directed by Sean Mercado, 10:52 min. A dark comedy about an unemployed man and a malevolent lobster.
Best of FAVS wraps up the 6th annual Mind Heart Vision Exhibit and a week of outreach between FAVS and Herndon High School and the Herndon community.
Mind Heart Vision runs March 15-27 at ArtSpace Herndon. It's a juried exhibit featuring work by Herndon High School students as they embark upon their senior thesis.
